A BOY AND DOG ADVENTURE NOT SOON FORGOTTEN
A girl’s voice screamed and Tarak peeked out from his hiding place to see Chiwa’chni running across the lower end of the meadow, a demon on her heels. Shrieking, the frail girl looked back over her shoulder, stumbled, and fell.
The ground shook like Grandmother Earth had swallowed a storm and was trying to belch it back out.
In the lower meadow, the axe’ ki had found a new target. “Ti’caw! Behind you!” Tarak shouted. When the man-arms reached out to grab the pudgy girl, she slapped at them, hard.
Suddenly the meadow was still.
Tarak had not felt the ground begin to rumble again or heard the hard fall of the demon’s stone feet. A hand gripped his arm and yanked him into the air; the ground fell away. Tarak felt a sharp pain on the back of his head and the world went black.
A Native American boy is stolen from his village near Mount Shasta and sold into slavery on the Columbia upriver from Fort Vancouver, Washington. The boy struggles with his own coming of age while his faithful dog travels the Pacific Northwest searching for him. The adventure is enriched by heroic characters: John McLoughlin “the Father of Oregon” and Kamiakin, a Yakima chief, who helped mold the multi-cultural world known as “the London of the West.” A young adult/juvenile Historic Fiction based on a true story from the 1840’s.
